Searching For the Correct Material for Your Baby Bedding
Crib bedding for girls: princesses and fairies. Baby bedding for boys: blue with puppy dogs. Wait - aren’t you forgetting something? Baby bedding is cute, but there is much more to consider than just appearances.
You are aware of your own allergies and avoid any irritants - but what about your new baby? The fabric of your baby’s bedding is very important, and should be considered before looks. High-quality infant bedding should have some information for you: fill power, fill material, cover fabric, and thread count. The first thing you might consider is the warmth of the bedding, especially if you’re having a winter baby, but it should also be lightweight and breathable. The Internet makes it easy to find out the construction materials for a wide variety of crib bedding choices, so do some research before you buy.
No one wants their baby to suffer from allergies, so choose fabrics that reduce the risk, like cotton or wool (that also includes alpaca or llama wool). Although some synthetic fabrics are breathable, most are not. Of equal concern is the emission of fumes that can occur as the fabrics age. If you have chosen a set like the Max baby bedding, which does have some polyester but is mostly cotton, then the potential risks may not be so high.
Wool is a great choice for a baby blanket - it’s both soft and comfortable. Wool blankets are fabulous with a cotton flannel backing. Choose your blanket size based on usage - small blankets for swaddling and big blankets for car trips or daycare.
Down is the perfect filler for a baby’s comforter - it is warm and breathable, with very little weight. Manufacturers understand that babies can be messy, so most down comforters are machine washable. To ensure that your comforter is hypoallergenic, make sure it has a high cleanliness rating. Cleanliness of down can be measured using either the turbidity test or the oxygen test. For the oxygen test, a lower number is better - with 10 being the government standard. For the turbidity test, on the other hand, a higher number is better, going up to around 550 at the top of the scale.
